My analysis
A small but exciting slate of Premier League games this Saturday is finished off with Bournemouth hosting Brentford. Heading into the weekend, the away team were six points behind Bournemouth and know that a win will take them closer to being back in the top half of the table.
These are two of the Premier League’s smallest teams but they’re also two of the most well-run. Brentford have become the archetype for what a small team entering the Premier League needs to be. They sign lesser-known players from Europe or the lower leagues and then sell them for a profit, putting that money back into the playing squad to keep improving.
It’s something they’ve done excellently over the past couple of years, and it’s a model that Bournemouth have evolved into following. This season we’ve seen Bournemouth hugely surpass expectations with a team built from across Europe, and a number of players have seen their stock rise hugely and will be chased by larger clubs this summer.
On the field, things have gone very differently over recent weeks. Heading into this game, Bournemouth have won just one of their previous five Premier League tilts, with three defeats and a draw against Spurs last time out.
However, we need to consider that before this dip in form they’d gone unbeaten in 11 straight, winning seven of them. Those were results that saw them flying up the Premier League. They head into this game with a relatively short injury list, meaning that their starting lineup should be fresh and healthy and more than ready to match Brentford.
