Jordan Henderson closing in on Ajax exit to join Champions League club

The 34 year old has had something of a nomadic time since leaving Liverpool in July 2023 first joining Saudi side Al Ettifaq before terminating his contract and moving to Amsterdam

The 81-cap England midfielder has featured regularly for Ajax this season, making 17 Eredivisie appearances and 12 more in the Europa League, but he is set to move on.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that a deal has been agreed to take him to Monaco on an 18-month deal which will run until June 2026.

His current contract with Ajax also ran until the summer of 2026, but whether there will be a transfer fee or not has not been confirmed.

Monaco are currently third in Ligue 1 and despite a 3-0 loss to Inter Milan on Wednesday night their Champions League hopes remain alive.

The side managed by Adi Hutter finished 17th in the Champions League group stage so will be in the draw for the knockout phase play-offs which is made on Friday.

Monaco will face either Benfica or PSG in the play-off, with Brest playing the other side.

The former Liverpool captain will link up with another ex-Reds player at Monaco in Takumi Minamino, while there are other familiar faces from English football including Folarin Balogun, Thilo Kehrer and Denis Zakaria.

Things have ended sooner than expected for Henderson at Ajax, having spoken very enthusiastically about joining the club last year.

‘I was really excited by the opportunity. Ajax is a huge club, an iconic club,’ Henderson told TNT Sports in March 2024.

‘Although they haven’t been in the best moment over the last year or so, I understood the vision of the club going forward, the project, and where I could come in and try and help. That really excited me.

‘Excitement was the overall feeling, to get in there and get going, and have the opportunity to play for this amazing club.
