Newcastle United last cup final: When did they last win a trophy and what is their semifinals record?

Manager Eddie Howe never won a major domestic trophy as a player or in the dugout and is looking to put that right with a resurgent squad who are challenging for honours and a UEFA Champions League return this season.

The Magpies host Arsenal on Wednesday in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semifinals hoping to progress to the showpiece at Wembley Stadium and give their fans something to talk about “for years and years”.

What is Newcastle’s record in cup competitions and when were they last a game away from glory? The Sporting News takes a look through the history books.

Newcastle’s last cup final came in 2023, when they reached the Carabao Cup showpiece in which they lost 2-0 to Manchester United at Wembley Stadium.

The Toon Army had previously last made the long journey from Tyneside to London for a major final when their club took part in the 1998/99 FA Cup final. They lost that 2-0 to Man United, too.

They did, however, win a cup of sorts in 2006, when they were pronounced the winners of the Intertoto Cup — a minor European competition run in the summer by UEFA that is fondly remembered by many but lightly regarded in terms of silverware.

Newcastle did not have to play in a final to triumph in the competition. Having reached the third of three rounds, they won by virtue of being the team involved in the competition to progress furthest in that season’s UEFA Cup.

The last major trophy Newcastle won was in the 1954/55 season, when they lifted the FA Cup by beating Manchester City.
