Ruben Amorim failed to connect with Marcus Rashford and is ‘thankful’ he left Man Utd

Ruben Amorim said he could not get through to Marcus Rashford and that they failed to connect but admitted he had taken a significant risk by not replacing the Manchester United striker in the transfer window

The United head coach said he was “thankful” Rashford was now on loan at Aston Villa with Unai Emery, and that questions about the unsettled England striker could be directed at another manager after weeks of uncertainty over the player’s future.

Rashford never played for Amorim again after being dropped for the Manchester derby in mid-December, with the head coach questioning his attitude and performances in training.

“What I say is I couldn’t put Marcus to see the way you’re supposed to play football and to train the way I see it,” Amorim said.

“And sometimes you have one player who is really good with one coach and the same player with another coach is different. I just wish the best to Rashford and Unai Emery, and they can connect because he’s a very good player.

“Thankfully about Marcus, he is in Birmingham now with Unai, so you can take these questions to another coach. We are just focused on our players.

“The case was some of the guys don’t adapt to the way I see football, the other guys adapt, and we are trying to build the team.”

Asked if Rashford effectively said he did not agree with his ideas and approach, Amorim said: “You know… it’s not the way that occurs, it’s something that you feel, as a coach and a player. It’s quite normal, it happened with a lot of coaches. The important thing is that I’m here saying it was my decision.

And Ty [Tyrell Malacia] and Antony, it was my decision to do these loans, and to keep some players even without any transfers. I am just here saying that was my decision.”

Nonetheless, Amorim admitted he had taken a gamble that could backfire by not replacing Rashford and Antony, who has joined Real Betis on loan, at a time when the team have lost seven of his first 13 Premier League matches in charge and are …
